Nissin Precision Selects Kyori for High-Speed Line
Located in Englewood, Ohio, Nissin Precision North America (NPNA) has been providing precision engineering and manufacturing solutions to the automotive industry for more than 20 years.
NPNA is a subsidiary of the Nissin Kogyo Group headquartered in Japan. The Nissin Kogyo group currently operates eight manufacturing and service facilities located in Asia and North America, primarily supplying stamped parts and solutions to the automotive industry.
The Nissin Precision North America facility began operations in 1989, supplying picture tube parts to Panasonic. As technologies evolved, NPNA shifted its focus to the automotive market, and today specializes in precision stamping and assembly, with valued added part washing and inspection services ensuring product delivery that meets the highest quality standards demanded by today’s automotive OEMs and Tier 1’s.
With the automotive industry rapidly embracing electric vehicle (EV) technology, NPNA stands at the forefront of innovation. The company has recently installed two state-of-the-art production lines for hybrid vehicle battery components. Each line features a Nidec Kyori SS-8 high speed press.
The Kyori SS Series features a high rigidity frame with tie-rod construction and eccentric load support through a precise eight-point slide guiding system. SS presses include a wide bolster to accommodate multi-step progressive dies, and dynamic accuracy with specific measurement of thermal displacement and bottom-dead-center repeatability.
“We needed a high speed machine for this project,” Nissin Precision North America President Kenichiro Matsui said. “When Nissin Kogyo has a high speed progressive application, we choose Kyori. The precision of the press is the main reason. We like the shorter stroke, high speed and precision. They are very reliable.”
“Kyori is also a favored supplier because we have a common history,” Matsui added. “When Kyori was founded, there was a stamping division that eventually departed and became Nissin. We are happy to use the Kyori presses and unite the two companies in success once again.”
With 15 Nidec Kyori presses installed at Nissin Kogyo plants in Asia, the Kyori SS-8 presses were a natural fit for the new production lines at NPNA.
The two lines producing parts for hybrid batteries are each designed to run at high speeds with two-out progressive dies. The parts are then transferred to an extensive water-based washing system.
“Probably our number one value-added feature we promote is our wash ability. We can wash to a 50 micron contamination level,” said NPNA Senior Vice President of Manufacturing Michael Greer. “A lot of the parts we’re making for the electric cars — either hybrid or full electric — require very high cleanliness standards. There’s so much on these printed circuit boards anymore, and the actual electronic components are so close to each other that the fear is if there’s anything dirty on the parts, especially anything that would be conductive, it would fall on the circuit boards and short them out. That’s why they need a very high cleanliness standard.”
Following the wash, robotic automation is utilized to advance the parts to NPNA’s proprietary high speed inspection system where 100 percent of nearly four million parts a month will be inspected.
In addition to wash and inspection, NPNA offers additional value-added services including assembly, in-die tapping, finishing and more.
Kyori is part of the Nidec Press & Automation (NP&A) group of companies, which includes other premier press builders like Minster and Arisa, teamed with automation experts at Vamco, Linear, Automatic Feed, CHS and SYS.
NPNA produces a variety of large structural parts for the auto industry, utilizing Minster presses and CHS feed equipment.
Headquartered in Minster, Ohio about 40 miles north of Nissin Precision, NP&A has an industry-leading customer service network with field service personnel dispatched from more than 25 global locations and repair part service centers located on four continents.
“Knowing that there’s service resources a phone call and an hour away is reassuring,” Greer said. “Something that I find phenomenal is we had Nidec Press & Automation down here to do an inspection on our 300-ton Minster (E2-HeviStamper) press. The press was new in 1996. We’ve owned it since 2006, so about 18 years. We’ve done no mechanical rebuild of it whatsoever and when they inspected it, the parallelism of the bed to the ram was within six thousandths. That’s incredible — like new specs. I’m sure we don’t have any other press on the floor like it.”
