Nidec Minster Sponsors Naming Rights
for Local Theater Revitalization Project

The Friends of the St. Marys Theater & Grand Opera House, Inc. recently held a dedication, ribbon-cutting, and name-reveal ceremony for the outdoor stage of the theater, known as the “back wall project.”

The construction of the outdoor venue is phase two of the overall four-phase theater revitalization project in downtown St. Marys.

Thanks to a generous donation, the newly revealed Nidec Minster Grand Pavilion is a unique outdoor venue, the construction of which also addressed structural issues with the back wall of the theater, which was originally constructed in 1895.

A focal point of the project is a massive 20-foot tall by 37-foot wide airport hangar door, which hinges in the middle and lifts to the top of the stage ceiling. This feature facilitates the easy placement of equipment and stage sets onto the interior stage, allowing for a deeper stage that can be utilized for outdoor music or drama events. The 20-foot by 100-foot covered exterior stage, along with the creation of two spacious interior rooms, will support entertainment and educational activities for St. Marys and the surrounding region.

“We are on the cusp of having an amazing venue for outdoor concerts, events, dramas, and whatever else can be imagined,” said Doug Spencer, representing the Friends of the Theater group.

Ronald Arling, President of Nidec Minster, shared comments about the reinvestment into the local St. Mary’s community.

In addition to donations, the bulk of the $602,000 project was funded with $500,000 from the state capital improvement budget, and several state dignitaries were on hand for the ceremony.

Spencer extended special gratitude on behalf of the Friends group and the local communities to House Speaker Matt Huffman, Senator Susan Manchester, and Representative Angie King for their efforts in helping the Friends secure the state funding.

“What an incredible project to be a part of,” Manchester said. “I absolutely love it when the state can invest in places like this that contribute to the life and vitality of a town like St. Marys. It was a source of great pride for me to contribute to the capital budget.”

“Today, we are celebrating the vision, dedication, and hard work of so many individuals,” King said. “We’re opening the curtain on an exciting new chapter for St. Marys — a place where big dreams become a reality. This project has breathed new life into a historic gem, unlocking exciting opportunities for the community and the future of St. Marys.”

JoLayne Morneau, from the State Historic Preservation Office, was also present to celebrate the occasion, along with Nidec Minster President Ronald Arling.

“This project would not have progressed without Nidec Minster stepping forward to provide naming rights sponsorship,” Spencer said.

“We were very happy to sponsor this project,” Arling added. “We have many employees from St. Marys who work at Nidec Minster, and we are grateful for them and for strong communities. The revitalization happening in downtown St. Marys has been very encouraging and inspiring. On behalf of Nidec Minster, we sincerely appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this.”

Matt Quinter from Baumer Construction of Minster, who was responsible for designing and constructing this modern engineering marvel, emphasized the importance of a dedicated and talented workforce.

Quinter took the time to thank all his employees and subcontractors for their contributions to this unique venue, similar to those found in metropolitan areas, but established with all new construction.

Since its opening, the Nidec Minster Grand Pavilion has hosted a July 4th laser light show, the Sunday Funday summer concert series, and Summerfest activities featuring the band Limited Time, Midwest Dueling Pianos, Lonnie J. Freeman’s A Tribute to Elvis, and Riders Round Outdoors.

The next event is the September Sunday Funday, scheduled for Sept. 7, from 2-6 p.m., featuring The Beer Barrel Boys, along with Neal & Emmy and Mark Cantwil.

“Yes, the Nidec Minster Grand Pavilion is located in St. Marys, but we truly believe this venue will become a valuable asset for enhancing quality of life and providing economic opportunities for the entire region,” Spencer added. “This venue is well-prepared to host significant patriotic American 250 events, due to the generosity and support of patrons, donors, legislators, and Nidec Minister.” For information about upcoming events, visit the St. Marys Theater & Grand Opera House online at: www.grandoperahouselive.com.
